These
are exhilarating times
if you love change.
These are terrifying times if you
have difficulty accepting and dealing with change.
The legal profession is trained to
look to the past to find the future. In
a fast-paced, discontinuous change environment, bar associations,
law schools and law firms are lost.
Dogma and nostalgia are powerful
enemies to a successful future.
In early August 1998, Charlie
Robinson served as a panelist on a program at the American Bar
Association Annual Meeting titled "The Ends of the
Profession." Frank Feather gave a preliminary presentation
where he asked the question "In a time of revolutionary change,
the 'Big Question' is, of course: "What does unprecedented
change imply for a precedent-oriented profession?"
Most attorneys would like to
believe there is an "attorney exception" for change but
that belief is simply not accurate. The profession can embrace the
change environment by enhancing those skills needed to compete
effectively in the 21st Century.
